For the last 20 years Emmanuel School has provided a Christ-centred education for children of primary school age in Derby. During this time many families have been blessed by the friendly, caring environment and high quality of instruction provided for their children. Recent OFSTED reports have confirmed the quality of what has been provided but despite the successes there has always been a feeling that the school has only done half the job. Many parents over the years have wished for a secondary school to complete the process that Emmanuel has started. That wish is about to become a reality!
During the course of 2009 a number of people felt God saying that the time is right to launch a new Christian secondary school. This has led to much talk, prayer and now action in forming a working group whose aim is to see a NEW school established under a NEW charitable trust which will offer Christian education up to GCSE level. Emmanuel School is currently run under East Midlands Christian Fellowships but the children in the school come from a number of churches, and some from non-Christian backgrounds. The goal is that the new Trust would draw its members from across the city of Derby and be more representative of the whole Christian community.
Recently announced government plans to fund the Free Schools programme have coincided with our vision to see the school expand. We have recently submitted a proposal to the government which we hope and pray would see us gaining government funding and we have identified a city centre site that we believe would serve our vision. This would make a FREE Christian education available to school chilidren of all ages in Derby. There is still much work to be done but are confident that we are moving in the right direction. A new Trust will need to be formed, premises acquired and new staff appointed, not forgetting new students too!
For the moment Emmanuel will continue to work at expanding its small Key Stage 3 section but with a view to seeing a signifcant increase in numbers once funding has been confirmed. If you want to be involved as a parent, as a trustee, as a teacher, as a pray-er or in any other capacity then we’d love to hear from you.
